Pippen Motor Company marked a significant milestone this week, commemorating 50 years as an official GMC dealership with a gathering that included General Motors representatives, local staff, and community members.
The event at the family-owned dealership on West Panola Street in Carthage was attended by General Motors employees representing everything from pre-sales to service and beyond, highlighting the depth and longevity of the relationship between the local dealership and GMC. The milestone was commemorated with a formal presentation, heartfelt remarks, and, in true Texas fashion, a hot lunch shared among friends and partners.
Matthew Page, zone manager for Buick-GMC, praised the local Pippen team for their enduring commitment. “We don’t give out a whole lot of these 50-year trophies,” he said. “I’ve been with the company for 13 years, and this is only my second one. It takes a lot to steer a boat this size, especially in a smaller community. Thank you for everything you do, it means more than you know.”

The partnership began in 1974, a time Page colorfully noted as “when Wheel of Fortune debuted on NBC, John Denver was topping the charts, and the Superdome opened in Louisiana.” Surviving five decades of shifting markets, economic ups and downs, and changing automotive trends is no small feat. But Pippen’s ability to adapt while staying grounded in its values is what sets it apart.
“Doing business in a small town for 50 years, let alone with three major brands under one roof, is a remarkable achievement,” said another GM representative, “The relationship with this dealership has been fantastic. It’s not just about selling vehicles. It’s about taking care of the customer, day in and day out.”
Founded by Billy Burt Pippen in 1951, the dealership has now served three generations of drivers across Panola County and beyond. Known for its strong inventory of GMC, Chevrolet, and Buick vehicles, Pippen Motor Co. also prides itself on being a full-service store, from financing to repair.
The current leadership team includes Executive Manager John Cooke III, Finance Manager Brandon Smith, and Sales Manager Will Blackwell, all of whom were present alongside Pippen staff, those from GM, as well as members from the community.
GMC’s presence in East Texas remains strong thanks to the local love for pickups. “Trucks are more than a vehicle here, they’re a statement,” said Page, “But beyond that, this dealership offers something for everyone. From SUVs to EVs, they’ve built something special that can serve just about any customer.”
